TIPS FOR FAMILIES

• Sometimes adult children need to make the hard call when it is time for an eightysomething to move or go to the hospital, but in most cases your role should be to help them make the right call themselves.

• Family members can provide much-needed help with the mountain of tasks a move requires or with the tasks that follow a death. Remember, though, that it is just as important to stop doing and listen. Let your elderly parents mourn the losses that a transition means for them.

• Remember that the pace of getting things done by people in their eighties may be far slower that what you expect. They may need to take their time.

• Some adult children provide too much help, more than an eightysomething wants or needs. Ask them directly if they want less help, more help, or the same amount of help you’re already providing.
